PageRank is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the web. Google figures that when one page links to another page, it is effectively casting a vote for the other page. The more votes that are cast for a page, the more important the page must be. Also, the importance of the page that is casting the vote determines how important the vote itself is. Google calculates a page’s importance from the votes cast for it. How important each vote is is taken into account when a page’s PageRank is calculated.
PageRank is Google’s way of deciding a page’s importance. It matters because it is one of the factors that determines a page’s ranking in the search results. It isn’t the only factor that Google uses to rank pages, but it is an important one.

Latent semantic indexing is the science of natural language processing. LSI analyzes relationships between words and is designed to distinguish naturally written text from keyword-stuffed documents. Latent semantic indexing considers natural and synonymous relationship between words.

For example, if you’re examining an article about an airplane, LSI will look for synonyms: aircraft, plane, aero plane. It will also look for related words, which are NOT synonymous to the word, but are often mentioned when discussing airplanes: ailerons, turbulence, fuel, clouds, sky, roll, pitch, etc.

The point of LSI is to detect natural writing and distinguish it from robotic copy written to manipulate search results. Google purchased the company Applied Semantics, which developed advanced LSI technology. Their know-how was incorporated into AdSense, and possibly into search algorithms.

Does the number of links from a page make a difference?
The total number of outbound links from a page makes a huge difference in the amount of PageRank transferred to each receiving page. A Web page with ten outbound links sends one tenth of the total available flow to the receiving page. A page linking to only one page sends all of the available PageRank transfer to the next Web page.

How does a page move higher from one PageRank level to the next?
PageRank is represented numerically from a low of PR0 to a rarely achieved high of PR10. PageRank is not a series of equal steps. It is logarithmic in its calculation. In the same way that the earthquake Richter scale is exponential in calculation, so too is the mathematics behind Google PageRank. It takes one step to move from a PR0 to a PR1, it takes a few more steps to PR3, it takes even more steps to PR4, and many more steps again to PR5, and so one. Each level is progressively harder to reach.

Does increasing the content change the Google PageRank?
Adding fresh content doesn’t provide a direct impact on Google PageRank. The transfer is entirely dependent upon inbound links to the page. On the other hand, providing interesting, informative and theme relevant content will attract many natural one way links to that page. A fresh infusion of PageRank arrives with each link.

How does theme relevance affect Google PageRank?
Theme relevance refers to how related to one another is the subject matter of two interlinked Web pages. If both pages discuss tigers, then they are highly theme relevant. It’s thought that Google may be implementing a system of Topic Sensitive PageRank, designed to pass along varying percentages of available PageRank based on theme relevance. The more closely related the pages, the higher the PageRank amount transferred.

1. Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. Google looks not only at the sheer volume of votes; among 100 other aspects it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. However, these aspects don’t count, when PageRank is calculated.
2. PageRank is based on incoming links, but not just on the number of them – relevance and quality are important (in terms of the PageRank of sites, which link to a given site).
3. PR(A) = (1-d) + d(PR(t1)/C(t1) + … + PR(tn)/C(tn)). That’s the equation that calculates a page’s PageRank.
4. Not all links weight the same when it comes to PR.
5. Ranking popularity considers site age, backlink relevancy and backlink duration. PageRank doesn’t.
6. Content is not taken into account when PageRank is calculated.
7. PageRank does not rank web sites as a whole, but is determined for each page individually.
8. Each inbound link is important to the overall total. Except banned sites, which don’t count.
9. PageRank values don’t range from 0 to 10. PageRank is a floating-point number.
10. Each Page Rank level is progressively harder to reach. PageRank is believed to be calculated on a logarithmic scale.
11. Google calculates pages PRs permanently.

Don’t just think of directories as being places that accept websites. Some of the best directories represent business partnerships and exist on sites like manufacturers you sell for, local government sites, or your local chamber of commerce. For example, Google lists some of the most popular Google Checkout business partners http://www.google.com/checkout/m.html

Your Own Customer Base

By setting a newsletter or sending automatic period announcements via email to your own customers, you increase the probability of repeat business. They’ve already bought from you, so they are very willing to buy your product or service again. You have to make sure you get their permission to send them those emails, otherwise, such communication may be considered as spam.

Local Directories

Placing your website in Local Directories is a great way to build inbound links and qualified traffic. And, best of all, most of these services are FREE:

local.google.com

local.yahoo.com

city.ask.com

truelocal.com

locallaunch.com

kijiji.com

yellowpages.com

superpages.com

citysearch.com

dogpile.com

411web.com

jumptoyourcity.com

Email Signatures:

Take advantage of your email and incorporate a tag line that motivates your users to visit your website. This is not considered spamming, nor is it annoying since you are taking advantage of an email that’s going out anyway. An example of a good signature would be:

“Dan Seidman, the War Correspondent of Selling, Sales Horror Story Library, read’em and weep (or laugh) -www.SalesAutopsy.com”.

Contests

Setting up a contest on your website is an excellent way to attract new and old visitors. Using your creativity and imagination, you can come up with fun, or serious ideas for a great contest.

Forums or Discussion Groups

Posting your expert opinion or help in a relevant forum is a sure way to get your website’s name out in cyberspace. Be sure to always leave a link back to your site, as well as a brief description on what you do. You never know how long afterwards your post can spark a lead.

Pay-Per-Click

Programs such as Google AdWords can be very cost effective and provide tons of incoming traffic to your site. Best of all, you get to choose your daily, weekly or monthly advertising budget by telling Google how much you are willing to pay for each click on only the specific keywords you wish to bid on.

Here is an Internet Marketing slide show presentation that summarizes the most important aspects of “How to Promote your Business on the Internet”. View it now >>
