Statement from President Barack Obama:
“Michelle and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Jobs. Steve was among the greatest of American innovators – brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.
By building one of the planet’s most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity. By making computers personal and putting the internet in our pockets, he made the information revolution not only accessible, but intuitive and fun. And by turning his talents to storytelling, he has brought joy to millions of children and grownups alike. Steve was fond of saying that he lived every day like it was his last. Because he did, he transformed our lives, redefined entire industries, and achieved one of the rarest feats in human history: he changed the way each of us sees the world.
The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve’s success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to Steve’s wife Laurene, his family, and all those who loved him.”

Statement from Bill Gates:
“I’m truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs’ death. Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work.
Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives.
The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come.
For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely. “

Statement from Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder and CEO:
“Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you.”

Statement from Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen:
“My condolences to Steve Jobs family and friends. We’ve lost a unique tech pioneer and auteur who knew how to make amazingly great products.”

Statement from House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
“Steve Jobs was a visionary who changed the way we live, an innovator whose products brought joy to millions, a risktaker who wasn’t afraid to challenge the status quo, and an entrepreneur who led one of the most creative companies of our time.
“His sage advice was respected by policymakers on both sides of the aisle. His courageous fight against cancer brought strength to many.
“I hope it is a comfort to those who loved him, especially his family, that so many grieve his loss and are praying for them at this sad time.”

Statement from Walt Disney president Bob Iger:
“Steve Jobs was a great friend as well as a trusted advisor. His legacy will extend far beyond the products he created or the businesses he built. It will be the millions of people he inspired, the lives he changed, and the culture he defined. Steve was such an “original,” with a thoroughly creative, imaginative mind that defined an era. Despite all he accomplished, it feels like he was just getting started. With his passing the world has lost a rare original, Disney has lost a member of our family, and I have lost a great friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Laurene and his children during this difficult time.”

Statement from California Gov. Edmund Brown:
“Steve Jobs was a great California innovator who demonstrated what a totally independent and creative mind can accomplish. Few people have made such a powerful and elegant imprint on our lives. Anne and I wish to express our deepest sympathy to Steve’s wife, Laurene, and their entire family.”

Statement from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg:
“Tonight, America lost a genius who will be remembered with Edison and Einstein, and whose ideas will shape the world for generations to come. Again and again over the last four decades, Steve Jobs saw the future and brought it to life long before most people could even see the horizon. And Steve’s passionate belief in the power of technology to transform the way we live brought us more than smart phones and iPads: it brought knowledge and power that is reshaping the face of civilization. In New York City’s government, everyone from street construction inspectors to NYPD detectives have harnessed Apple’s products to do their jobs more efficiently and intuitively. Tonight our City – a city that has always had such respect and admiration for creative genius – joins with people around the planet in remembering a great man and keeping Laurene and the rest of the Jobs family in our thoughts and prayers.”

PageRank is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the web. Google figures that when one page links to another page, it is effectively casting a vote for the other page. The more votes that are cast for a page, the more important the page must be. Also, the importance of the page that is casting the vote determines how important the vote itself is. Google calculates a page’s importance from the votes cast for it. How important each vote is is taken into account when a page’s PageRank is calculated.
PageRank is Google’s way of deciding a page’s importance. It matters because it is one of the factors that determines a page’s ranking in the search results. It isn’t the only factor that Google uses to rank pages, but it is an important one.

Latent semantic indexing is the science of natural language processing. LSI analyzes relationships between words and is designed to distinguish naturally written text from keyword-stuffed documents. Latent semantic indexing considers natural and synonymous relationship between words.

For example, if you’re examining an article about an airplane, LSI will look for synonyms: aircraft, plane, aero plane. It will also look for related words, which are NOT synonymous to the word, but are often mentioned when discussing airplanes: ailerons, turbulence, fuel, clouds, sky, roll, pitch, etc.

The point of LSI is to detect natural writing and distinguish it from robotic copy written to manipulate search results. Google purchased the company Applied Semantics, which developed advanced LSI technology. Their know-how was incorporated into AdSense, and possibly into search algorithms.

Does the number of links from a page make a difference?
The total number of outbound links from a page makes a huge difference in the amount of PageRank transferred to each receiving page. A Web page with ten outbound links sends one tenth of the total available flow to the receiving page. A page linking to only one page sends all of the available PageRank transfer to the next Web page.

How does a page move higher from one PageRank level to the next?
PageRank is represented numerically from a low of PR0 to a rarely achieved high of PR10. PageRank is not a series of equal steps. It is logarithmic in its calculation. In the same way that the earthquake Richter scale is exponential in calculation, so too is the mathematics behind Google PageRank. It takes one step to move from a PR0 to a PR1, it takes a few more steps to PR3, it takes even more steps to PR4, and many more steps again to PR5, and so one. Each level is progressively harder to reach.

Does increasing the content change the Google PageRank?
Adding fresh content doesn’t provide a direct impact on Google PageRank. The transfer is entirely dependent upon inbound links to the page. On the other hand, providing interesting, informative and theme relevant content will attract many natural one way links to that page. A fresh infusion of PageRank arrives with each link.

How does theme relevance affect Google PageRank?
Theme relevance refers to how related to one another is the subject matter of two interlinked Web pages. If both pages discuss tigers, then they are highly theme relevant. It’s thought that Google may be implementing a system of Topic Sensitive PageRank, designed to pass along varying percentages of available PageRank based on theme relevance. The more closely related the pages, the higher the PageRank amount transferred.

1. Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. Google looks not only at the sheer volume of votes; among 100 other aspects it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. However, these aspects don’t count, when PageRank is calculated.
2. PageRank is based on incoming links, but not just on the number of them – relevance and quality are important (in terms of the PageRank of sites, which link to a given site).
3. PR(A) = (1-d) + d(PR(t1)/C(t1) + … + PR(tn)/C(tn)). That’s the equation that calculates a page’s PageRank.
4. Not all links weight the same when it comes to PR.
5. Ranking popularity considers site age, backlink relevancy and backlink duration. PageRank doesn’t.
6. Content is not taken into account when PageRank is calculated.
7. PageRank does not rank web sites as a whole, but is determined for each page individually.
8. Each inbound link is important to the overall total. Except banned sites, which don’t count.
9. PageRank values don’t range from 0 to 10. PageRank is a floating-point number.
10. Each Page Rank level is progressively harder to reach. PageRank is believed to be calculated on a logarithmic scale.
11. Google calculates pages PRs permanently.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. Typically, the earlier a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines.

As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work and what people search for. Optimizing a website primarily involves editing its content and HTML coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines.

The acronym “SEO” can also refer to “search engine optimizers,” a term adopted by an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients, and by employees who perform SEO services in-house. Search engine optimizers may offer SEO as a stand-alone service or as a part of a broader marketing campaign. Because effective SEO may require changes to the HTML source code of a site, SEO tactics may be incorporated into web site development and design. The term “search engine friendly” may be used to describe web site designs, menus, content management systems and shopping carts that are easy to optimize.

Another class of techniques, known as black hat SEO or Spamdexing, use methods such as link farms and keyword stuffing that degrade both the relevance of search results and the user-experience of search engines. Search engines look for sites that employ these techniques in order to remove them from their indices.

One of the easiest was to start building links is to submit your site to leading general web directories and directories in your niche. Don’t just think of directories as being places that accept websites. Some of the best directories represent business partnerships and exist on sites like manufacturers you sell for, local government sites, or your local chamber of commerce. For example, Google lists some of the most popular Google Checkout business partners http://www.google.com/checkout/m.html

During the Great Deppression, while most businesses perished, many actually rose to become great powers after the storm was over. Those who did, did so while getting better, by going out and trying to sell their better services to the public, by being proactive. They did not ask, what can customers do for us in these tough times? Rather, they thought “how can we make it better for our customers so that in these tough times they prefer us over everyone else?”

Think & brainstorm how you can provide an even better product or service than what you have been providing so far. If you own a Cleaning Service, think of ways how you can clean better, faster, greener. Don’t cut corners, clean them! Your customers will recognize you are worth the money you charge and will happily recommend you to their friends and family.

Do more than what you are expected to do. I am not a fan of discounts, what discounts do is educate your customers that first, your business can take charging less; and second, it’s okay to wait until the next discount comes around. Instead, charge a fair price and do more than what’s expected of you in the deal. Throw in a bonus for good measure. For you, this bonus might represent a negligible cost, but the value you add is much greater, and your customers will appreciate it. If you sell vitamins, give the customer a mini/travel-size vitamins jar for free. If you charge by the hour, work 65 or 70 minutes in your project or case and bill 1 hour, and make sure to let your client know the extra time devoted to her.

If you have a website, leave links to your site at every place you can do so for free. Post useful comments in blogs or forums with a small blurb about you in the bottom if possible. Don’t make it a promotional pitch, people will tune that out and possibly even blacklist you if you come out too strong. You want to be known for the good opinions, recommendations or suggestions you share and eventually become an authority in your field not a nuisance.

List your business and website in the new local portals that have sprung around by the numbers. Most of them are free. Be sure to include relevant keywords in the title of your listing, for example: “Miami Roofing Distinguished Contracting Group”. Some of the most popular local portals are the following:

411 DA

ALK -CoPilot

AOL

Ask

AssistGuide

CitySearch

Collarity

DENSO Auto Nav.

Dex

Disney

GetFave

Go2

IBegin

Idearc

InfoSpace

InsiderPages

JVC GPS

kgb_USA/infonxx

Kudzu

LiveDeal

Localeze

Lowrance/Navico

LSSI – Volt

Menu Network

Merchant Circle

Mojo Pages

Onstar

Open List

Wuebecor/Canoe.ca

Search Bug

Spock

Super Pages

TeleAtlas

TeleMap

Tellme

Topix

True Local

V-Enable

viaMichelin

Vindigo/Zingy

Windows Live

Yahoo Local

Google Local

Yellow Book

Yellow Pages

Yellow Bot

Yellow Page City

YellowPagesInc

Yelp

YP

Zenrin

Attend networking events. Check out your local chamber of commerce, business association, alumni association, any place where there may be professionals that gather together in an effort to grow and promote their businesses. This may take some time and commitment on your part, but eventually, it will pay big dividends. One particularly fruitful networking organization for us has been BNI, Business Network International. BNI’s format is very structured and aimed specifically at increasing members’ businesses by referrals and word-of-mouth marketing. Go to www.bni.com, find a local chapter and go for a visit.

Business cards & flyers. Don’t underestimate their power. They are inexpensive and easy to carry around. Always have a bundle of them with you. Leave them at the supermarket, at your dentist’s office, the pizza parlor, the Chinese take-out, in bulletin boards … anywhere where there is pedestrian traffic or where people might have to sit and wait. When you’re stuck waiting you will read what’s around you, and often more than once each piece of literature. Make it a habit to never leave your home or office without them, and to always leave a stack of them in a public place. Think of how many more places people might get the chance to learn about you and your business if you do this every time you go out.

Nothing lasts forever, and tough times are not the exception. Brighter times will come and if you have done your very best for each and everyone of your customers, you will come out ahead. History has shown us that recessions and tough times always come about in cycles. Don’t think about how bad things are, think about how good and how much better you are getting, how you are finding new & better ways to do your business. Get a vision of you succeeding and don’t let go off that vision. One of the best business tips for tough times I once read is this: “Remember, you will succeed in the same proportion of the things that you do for others that you are not expected to do”. It makes sense. If you do only what’s already expected in the transaction how can you stand out?
