Statement from President Barack Obama:
“Michelle and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Jobs. Steve was among the greatest of American innovators – brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.
By building one of the planet’s most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity. By making computers personal and putting the internet in our pockets, he made the information revolution not only accessible, but intuitive and fun. And by turning his talents to storytelling, he has brought joy to millions of children and grownups alike. Steve was fond of saying that he lived every day like it was his last. Because he did, he transformed our lives, redefined entire industries, and achieved one of the rarest feats in human history: he changed the way each of us sees the world.
The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve’s success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to Steve’s wife Laurene, his family, and all those who loved him.”

Statement from Bill Gates:
“I’m truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs’ death. Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work.
Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives.
The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come.
For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely. “

Statement from Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder and CEO:
“Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you.”

Statement from Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen:
“My condolences to Steve Jobs family and friends. We’ve lost a unique tech pioneer and auteur who knew how to make amazingly great products.”

Statement from House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
“Steve Jobs was a visionary who changed the way we live, an innovator whose products brought joy to millions, a risktaker who wasn’t afraid to challenge the status quo, and an entrepreneur who led one of the most creative companies of our time.
“His sage advice was respected by policymakers on both sides of the aisle. His courageous fight against cancer brought strength to many.
“I hope it is a comfort to those who loved him, especially his family, that so many grieve his loss and are praying for them at this sad time.”

Statement from Walt Disney president Bob Iger:
“Steve Jobs was a great friend as well as a trusted advisor. His legacy will extend far beyond the products he created or the businesses he built. It will be the millions of people he inspired, the lives he changed, and the culture he defined. Steve was such an “original,” with a thoroughly creative, imaginative mind that defined an era. Despite all he accomplished, it feels like he was just getting started. With his passing the world has lost a rare original, Disney has lost a member of our family, and I have lost a great friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Laurene and his children during this difficult time.”

Statement from California Gov. Edmund Brown:
“Steve Jobs was a great California innovator who demonstrated what a totally independent and creative mind can accomplish. Few people have made such a powerful and elegant imprint on our lives. Anne and I wish to express our deepest sympathy to Steve’s wife, Laurene, and their entire family.”

Statement from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg:
“Tonight, America lost a genius who will be remembered with Edison and Einstein, and whose ideas will shape the world for generations to come. Again and again over the last four decades, Steve Jobs saw the future and brought it to life long before most people could even see the horizon. And Steve’s passionate belief in the power of technology to transform the way we live brought us more than smart phones and iPads: it brought knowledge and power that is reshaping the face of civilization. In New York City’s government, everyone from street construction inspectors to NYPD detectives have harnessed Apple’s products to do their jobs more efficiently and intuitively. Tonight our City – a city that has always had such respect and admiration for creative genius – joins with people around the planet in remembering a great man and keeping Laurene and the rest of the Jobs family in our thoughts and prayers.”

New York Times (01/27/09) P. D3; Markoff, John

University of Washington researchers have released the first component of a public system that will provide authentication for an archive of video interviews with prosecutors and other members of the International Criminal Tribunal on the Rwandan genocide, along with the first portion of the Rwandan archive. The system will be available for others to digitally preserve and authenticate first-hand accounts of war crimes, atrocities, and genocide. The tools are needed because advancements in technology have made it possible to alter digital text, video, and audio in nearly undetectable ways. The researchers say the system means the authenticity of digital documents such as videos, transcripts of personal accounts, and court records can be indisputably proved for the first time. The researchers have created a publicly available digital fingerprint, known as a cryptographic hash mark, that will make it possible for anyone to determine that the documents are authentic and have not been tampered with. The digital hash concept was first conceived by IBM’s Hans Peter Luhn in the early 1950s, and the researchers are the first to attempt to simplify the application for nontechnical users and offer a complete system for long-term data preservation. Similar efforts to preserve a complete record of the World Wide Web and other documents led to computer scientist Brewster Kahle launching the Internet Archive in 1996. Another digital preservation effort was launched by Stanford University librarians in 2000. Their system, dubbed LOCKSS, for Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe, preserves journals by distributing copies of documents over the Internet to an international community of libraries.

The 6th International Conference on Autonomic Computing and Communications
Barcelona, Spain, June 15–19, 2009

Sponsored by IEEE CS (Pending) and in cooperation with ACM (Pending)

http://icac2009.acis.ufl.edu/

Call for papers

SCOPE

To deal with the increasing complexity of large-scale computing systems,
computers and applications must learn to manage themselves in accordance
with high-level guidance from humans – a vision that has been referred to
as autonomic computing. Meeting the grand challenges of autonomic computing
requires scientific and technological advances in a wide variety of fields,
as well as new software and system architectures that support the effective
integration of the constituent technologies. The purpose of the 6th
International Conference on Autonomic Computing and Communications (ICAC-09)
is to bring together researchers and practitioners addressing all aspects of
self-management in computing systems and applications. In doing so, we hope
to further build and nurture a community that can work together to realize
the vision of large-scale self-managing systems. The conference builds on
previous highly influential meetings in New York, Seattle, Dublin,
Jacksonville and Chicago.

Papers are solicited on a broad array of topics of relevance to autonomic
computing, particularly those that bear on connections and relationships
among different areas of research or report on prototype systems or
experiences. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

* Autonomic computing systems or prototype systems that exhibit
self-monitoring, self-configuration, self-optimization, self-healing,
and/or self-protection.
* Fundamental science of self-managing systems: understanding,
controlling, or exploiting emergent behavior, fault-tolerance, machine
learning, control theory, predictive methods and their use to automate
manual operations and enforce behavior.
* Software engineering principles and architectures for self-managing
systems, based on interoperable Grid Services, agent-based systems,
Web Services, model-based systems or novel paradigms such as biological,
economic or social.
* System-level technologies, middleware or services that entail
interactions among two or more components of self-managing systems in
standalone, distributed, cluster, and Grid computing environments (e.g.,
health monitoring, dependency analysis, problem localization or
remediation, workload management, and provisioning).
* Toolkits, environments, models, languages, runtime and compiler
technologies for building self-managing components, systems or
applications.
* Specific self-managing components, such as server, storage, network,
data center or specific application elements. Emphasis should be placed
on techniques or lessons that may generalize to other components.
* Management topics, such as specification and modeling of service-level
agreements, negotiation/conversation support, behavior enforcement,
etc., tie in with IT governance, and interaction with legacy systems.
* Interfaces to autonomic systems, including user interfaces, interfaces
for monitoring and controlling behavior, techniques for defining,
distributing, and understanding policies.
* Experiences with autonomic system or component prototypes: measurements,
evaluations, or analyses of system behavior, user studies, experiences
with large-scale deployments of self-managing systems or applications.
* Applications of autonomics to real and complex problems in science,
engineering, business and society.

PAPER/POSTER SUBMISSIONS AND PUBLICATION

Full papers (a maximum of 10 pages in length) and posters (2 pages) are invited
on a wide variety of topics relating to autonomic computing as indicated above.
All manuscripts will be reviewed and judged on merits including correctness,
originality, technical strength, quality of presentation, and relevance to the
conference themes. Submitted papers must include original work, and may not be
under consideration for another conference or journal. They should also not be
under review or be submitted to another forum during the ICAC-09 review process.
Authors should submit full papers or posters electronically (PDF or postscript)
via EDAS using the link on the ICAC-09 conference web site. Formatting
instructions will also be posted at the web site. Accepted papers and posters
will appear in proceedings published by ACM (to be confirmed), which will be
distributed at the conference. Authors of accepted papers/poster are expected
to present their work at the conference.

WORKSHOPS, DEMONSTRATIONS AND EXHIBITION

ICAC-09 welcomes proposals for co-located workshops on specific topics of
general interest to the autonomic computing community. Workshops are expected
to publish proceedings, and should cover areas that may not be properly
addressed in the main scientific program. ICAC-09 will also feature a
demonstration and exhibition session consisting of prototypes and technology
artifacts such as demonstrating autonomic software or autonomic computing
principles. Entries will be judged by a separate subcommittee led by the
demo/exhibit chair.

INDUSTRY SESSION

A singular value of ICAC is the confluence of top researchers and practitioners
from both academia and industry. ICAC-09 will provide a readout of various
technologies currently in play from product perspectives. Among the areas to be
addressed are core enablers for autonomic capabilities to be realized, such as
frameworks, protocols and autonomic engines in production systems. The industry
session also will address current areas of difficulty that present direct
opportunities for both academic and corporate research. Topics will be relevant
to entrepreneurs, product developers, architects, managers, marketers and end
users. Papers and posters reflecting such industry perspectives are especially
encouraged and can be submitted as described above.

STUDENT AWARDS

A student best paper award will be presented, consisting of a commemorative
plaque, complimentary student registration to the conference and an honorarium
that will partially cover travel & hotel costs. (A student paper is defined as
one in which the principal (not sole) author is a student.) The student will be
required to present the paper to receive the award.

IMPORTANT DATES

Workshop proposals: September 25, 2008
Full paper submission: 11:59 EST, January 19, 2009
Author notification: March 9, 2009
Hot Topics submission: 11:59 EST, March 20, 2009

Like smart pets that never require feeding, robots will scoot from room to room to wake the homeowners in the morning, remind them to eat and send for help if someone falls.

Sensors embedded throughout the seniors’ homes will detect when the residents have sleepless nights or forget to take their medication. Web-based computer software will notify caregivers.

“This is the future of aging,” said Fillia Makedon, a professor of computer science and engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington. “Technology will let people grow old at home.”

With support from the National Science Foundation and others, Dr. Makedon has created the Heracleia Human-Centered Computing Laboratory at UTA, where she, other faculty members and their students are designing technology that will allow tomorrow’s seniors to remain independent longer than previous generations.

The research facility, and a handful of similar labs across the country, will be the springboard for what experts predict will be an exploding assistive technology industry within a decade.

The UTA lab houses a make-believe one-bedroom apartment equipped with high-tech cameras, motion sensors and robots, and surrounded by computer stations.

Professors and students measure any movement within the furnished apartment and feed the data into computers that will alert them to any measurement outside a normal range.

Once the technology is perfected, caregivers will be able to sign on to a secure Web site and check how well a senior is recovering from surgery or responding to a new prescription, Dr. Makedon said.

It will also act as an early warning system for caregivers, she said. An unexplained change in someone’s gait, for example, might signal a higher risk of falling and the need for a walker.

“The goal is to create a safer environment without unnecessarily invading someone’s privacy,” Dr. Makedon said. “Caregivers will turn on the cameras only if they suspect something is wrong.”

Besides advancing basic research in the field, the lab is introducing students to the everyday problems of old age and challenging them to find technology-based solutions, she said.

Avoiding institutions

Many experts hope that assistive technology will help ease the strain the aging population will place on the nation’s long-term care system.

There aren’t enough trained caregivers or facilities to accommodate the expected doubling of older adults over the next 25 years, said Mary Jane Koren, an assistant vice president at the Commonwealth Fund, a private foundation that studies health care issues.

And Medicaid, the federal-state program that pays for most long-term care after people deplete their personal resources, won’t be able to cover boomers’ costs without some form of relief, she said.

“Assistive technology will hold down long-term care costs, lighten the burden on caregivers and let the elderly stay at home, which is where most prefer to grow old,” Dr. Koren said.

Fears that seniors will be wary of such technology are unfounded, experts say. The AARP Foundation has found that nine of 10 older adults will agree to remote monitoring if it keeps them independent.

“We’re on the cusp of another electronics revolution,” said Anne Tumlinson, a senior adviser for Avalere Health, a health care consulting firm. “Older adults will soon rely on assistive technology as much as cellphones.”

A few remote monitoring systems and medication dispensers have already made it out of the research lab and into the marketplace. But experts expect a surge of devices in five to 10 years.

In fact, the nascent assistive technology industry is planning a coming-out party in January at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the world’s largest consumer technology trade show.

One exhibit will be “a home of the future” sponsored by the Center for Aging Services Technologies, a coalition of more than 400 technology companies, research universities and government officials.

“We’ll show people what’s already available and what other cool things are on their way,” said coalition spokeswoman Lauren Shaham.

The biggest barrier to these products making the leap from university and corporate labs to seniors’ residences will be cost, she predicted, since government programs and private insurers typically don’t cover them.

Practicalities

Industry officials are pressing Congress to bring together leaders from business, government and health care to figure out how to make assistive technology more affordable and available.

“This technology will require an initial outlay, but it will produce long-term savings,” Dr. Koren said. “Caring for someone at home costs far less than in an assisted living or nursing facility.”

Still, UTA’s Dr. Makedon said, the greatest benefit of assistive technology will be peace of mind for seniors and caregivers. “It’ll create a safer environment for the frail, so families needn’t worry as much.”

The professor has only to think of her own mother to understand the real-life implications of her work. The 87-year-old woman has fallen twice, and Dr. Makedon is afraid the next accident will be more serious.

“This research is more than an academic exercise.”
